WHERE TO STAY ON THE BIG ISLAND (HILO SIDE)
The island of Hawai’i, colloquially known as the Big Island, is, as the name suggests, a BIG ISLAND. Generally speaking, folks typically divide their time on the island between the Kona side of the island (East) and the Hilo side (West). There’s a lot to see North and South of the island as well, but, for accommodation purposes, folks typically stay either on the Kona side or the Hilo side. We were no different and would recommend the same approach to you if you’re thinking of visiting the Big Island. So, where should you stay on the Hilo side? For us, this is a no-brainer: we absolutely recommend that you at least spend some nights at Volcano Eco Retreat by Heart Core Hotels.
What is an eco-retreat? Essentially, as we understand it, an eco-retreat is a vacation property that is committed to the preservation of the natural environment through various sustainable mechanisms. Volcano Eco Retreat has been constructed with the highest quality LEED-certified materials, embodying a Polynesian and bamboo-infused style. The food served on the property is all locally sourced and plant-based; indeed, the property contains a beautiful garden where some of the fruits and vegetables are grown. Additionally, the food is arranged and plated beautifully, decorated with the property’s tropical flowers! All of the on-site infrastructure systems have been designed to minimize the impact on the fragile Hawai’i environment without compromising on the luxurious experience.
The property is located in Volcano, which is approximately 30 minutes away from Hilo, and probably 25 minutes away from Volcano National Park. It’s the perfect location when staying on the Hilo side. The property features eight cabanas: five bedroom cabanas (one of which is for the hosts), one living and relaxation area, one dining area, and a hot tub in the center of the property. The property is also home to an incredible garden, a beautiful hammock, and an awesome “kind is the new cool” sign. The property is secluded, quiet, and the perfect embodiment of serenity. Not to mention, on most nights, you can see a sky adorn with bright stars, and occasionally, you can see the Milkyway without needing to go to the top of Mauna Kea. The hosts of the property are amazing! Gaby, Tony, and Sushi (‘Chief Barketing Officer’ and dog) pay attention to every detail. The rooms are immaculately done and the property is exceptionally well maintained.
We enjoyed our stay here so much that when we visited the Big Island a second time, we stayed here again! We knew staying there would give us the opportunity to decompress, disconnect, and get off the grid. Another selling point for us was the emphasis on inclusivity. The hotel welcomes travelers of all different backgrounds and beliefs, allowing you to come as you are! After a stay at this wonderful retreat, you leave feeling like part of the Heart Core Hotels Ohana (family). We can’t wait to stay here again in the future.
