Five Incredible Foods You Must Try in Maine
Portland, Maine is 100 percent a foodie town, especially if you LOVE seafood! Bon Appetit magazine named Portland, Maine “America’s Foodiest Small Town” and The Food Network named it one of its top five “Most Delicious Destinations.” After spending a few days here stuffing my face, I understood why!
1. A Lobster Roll (The High Roller Lobster Co.)
If you went to Maine and didn’t get a lobster roll, then did you really go to Maine?? It is the most iconic dish to get while visiting and you don’t even need to go to a specific location; you can get it anywhere in town! Did you know that 80 percent of America’s lobsters are caught in Maine’s waters? I chose to go to High Roller Lobster Co. because my friend Matt, who is from Maine, recommended them to me. They did not disappoint! They offer different sauces to dress your lobster roll (garlic mayo to lobster ghee) on a hot buttered roll, pregnant with copious amounts of lobster meat! It was so good that I basically inhaled it!
2. Whoopie Pie (The High Roller Lobster Co.)
After eating my lobster roll in record time, I ended up ordering a whoopie pie for dessert. A whoopie pie is a cake sandwich, and the traditional type is made with chocolate cake with crème filling! It was decent and pretty filling; I ended up sharing it with Justin who was not a fan LOL! Def worth trying for all of you folks with a sweet tooth!
3. Lobster Stew – Third Alarm Diner
Now usually people recommend trying the seafood chowders, but I wanted to get something on the lighter side. The lobster stew at Thrid Alarm Diner is a sleeper hit! It came in a buttery creme broth, packed with lobster meat. It was the perfect appetizer leading to my dinner, especially on a cold day!
4. Holy Donut!
Back to the sweets! Holy Donut tops every foodie’s list when it comes to foods to eat in Maine. What separates this spot from your standard donut shop is that they make their donuts with potatoes! They also have seasonal flavors like honey lavender, which was extremely delicious! The exterior was frosted evenly and the interior was moist. It’s THE DONUT that rivals all donuts!
5. Duck Fat
If you love duck and need a break from all the seafood, come here! Duck Fat offers a limited menu of items like duck poutine, duck banh mi, and duck salad. The salad was pretty filling; as you can see, they did not skimp on the meat! If I had more room, I would have ordered the poutine! So many regrets!
